Luis Moreno's Music

Luis Moreno is rolling up his sleeves, grabbing his guitar and taking it to the road for yet another series of dates beginning this Spring and will be performing in NYC, New Jersey, Long Island and Los Angeles, California throughout the remaining Summer/Fall of 2008!

"Again, it's another great opportunity to get out there locally, as best as I can, meet some new people, entertain, and continue feeding myself with "creativity" which is what always happens whenever I play." Moreno says.

Having dismissed a near completed acoustic debut album titled "Luis Moreno: Early to Rise" he has turned his main efforts toward meeting with other musicians and is looking forward to reworking previous material and moving in a more full band direction. Until his original music comes to display, Moreno continues to entertain audiences both privately and publicly as a cover artist with an ever-evolving setlist.

"I still find that one of the main side-effects of playing out is that it continues to inspire me to write new material and ideas... keeping me creatively centered which is REALLY important. The tricky part is trying to not be too critical of my own work, which always seems to paralyze me and box me in from putting my own songs out. I've been rightly accused of this time and time again!" Moreno laughs.

"But you keep on going which is all you can really do. Unlike a lot of other musicians, where a dedication to music is the ultimate "focus" of their lives, for me it's just a "part" of mine... a big part, but just a part, nonetheless. Another sort of creative thread by which to express my soul's core."

A local hero in the field of Botany and Horticulture, managing a business on Long Island and topping his near seventy-hour per week work schedule with his "love for the craft," Moreno stands to acoustically set himself apart from your average cover-act and play his way into the hearts of those who love great music.

"I played quite a few shows in 2007 and even more a lot of private engagements, as well. Though the setlist would sort of change and evolve and become something more expansive from the earlier part of the year, I continue to be a performer that wants to grab my audience's attention by way of song choice and delivery." Moreno explains.

"There's something to be said about a "storytelling-type" of approach, one that communicates and entertains but doesn't omit the great rhythmic numbers as well. That's what I do. I live by the code that if the music is not coming from the middle of you, from your center, if your choices are not honest, the songs just fail... and to that effect, what then is the point?" Moreno asks.

"By playing standards you may succeed in slaking the thirst of someone's "good-time request" on any given night, but for me there has got to be a give. There has got to be originality and a real expression that goes beyond just playing cover-tunes. You've got to believe in what you are doing, in what you are saying, in what you are singing, and it has got to be from the heart. This, in large part, is the charm of what I do. If not, why hire a live performer? Why not rent a jukebox, or Karaoke... or just hire a DJ instead?"

With influences that range from Richie Havens, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, to Lyle Lovett, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison; it is the music of Bruce Springsteen in particular that continues to dominate as a laid foundation in Moreno's setlist.

"I may avoid a standard like "Brown Eyed Girl" in lieu of Springsteen's "Tougher Than The Rest" or may enjoy taking my audience down to "Lucky Town" instead of "Margaritaville"... as corny as that sounds! Of course, with no disrespect to the great Van Morrison and Jimmy Buffett, it is choices like these that keep me centered and honest, delivering the goods in perhaps a less popular but much stronger and more resonant set of music." Moreno explains.

"I've been asked time and time again "Why Bruce?" Though I know it's a safe choice, an entertaining one and one that I do extremely well, (Moreno is most sought and employed in private engagement for his Springsteen covers, traveling frequently to perform them) I simply believe he is quite arguably the best storytelling/songwriter there is. I don't think there has been another archetype more satisfying to have followed over the years. His music has remained consistent and honest and continues to inspire me in ways few others have. Part of this is primal, of course. It comes from discovering his music at such a young age and believing in it. When all else has failed... the music never has! That is the heart of what I try to do on any given day or night, guitar in hand or not, in front of an audience or alone, at my work or on my leisure; it's a life lesson. It's a code, to walk with an ear to the earth and an ear to my heart. I've had moments in my life where sitting alone in the dark, playing "Racing In The Street" on a twelve-string guitar... was all I had to get me through. It got me through."

"I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. Springsteen in September of 2007, literally crossing paths one afternoon, upon leaving an old run-down pawn shop in Asbury Park, New Jersey. When I shook his hand in greeting, I thought of a short story I'd written some years back about a hero-less hero. One whose great success inspired so many a world at their fingertips, but gave the hero little to nothing in return for a hero of his own. After we said goodbye I watched him walk away and wondered if ever there were a musician that moved him, inspired him and satisfied him in the same way he does his "fans." I wished I'd racked up the courage to ask him, but I'm certain the answer is "No." I'm certain that if there had been, Bruce Springsteen could have never achieved his level of craft... because he'd never have to."

As for Moreno's multi-tasking commitment, and grueling work schedule?

"Yeah, people ask me how I do it all the time! It's funny, I just smile and tell them that some guys find time to golf, I swing a guitar... I suppose for the same reasons."
